Botox Aftercare: What to Expect After Your Treatment

Your Botox treatment doesn’t end when you leave the clinic. Following the right aftercare instructions helps ensure your treatment settles properly and gives you the best possible results.

At Beauty edit Medical Aesthetics in Calgary, we provide every patient with personalized aftercare instructions. Here’s what you should (and shouldn’t) do after your appointment.

The First 4 Hours After Botox

The first few hours after your Botox treatment are the most important. During this time, the product begins binding to the targeted muscles.

We recommend:

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours.
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas.
  • Avoid wearing tight hats or headbands that place pressure on the forehead.
  • Gentle facial expressions such as smiling or raising your eyebrows are perfectly fine.

What Should You Avoid?

For the remainder of the day, it is best to avoid activities that could increase swelling or affect the treated areas.

  • Intense exercise
  • Hot yoga
  • Saunas or steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Facial massages
  • Chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • Laser treatments
  • Excessive alcohol consumption

Most patients can return to work and their normal daily routine immediately after treatment.

When Will I See Results?

You may begin noticing improvement within 3–5 days, although some patients notice subtle changes sooner. Full results typically develop within 10–14 days.

If this is your first Botox treatment, try not to judge your results too early. The medication continues working over the first two weeks

Common Side Effects

Paste:

Most patients experience little to no downtime after Botox. Mild side effects are common and usually resolve within a few hours to a few days.

You may notice:

  • Small bumps at the injection sites
  • Mild redness
  • Minor bruising
  • Tenderness
  • A mild headache

These side effects are temporary and generally do not interfere with your normal daily activities.

When Should I Contact My Injector?

Although Botox is very safe when performed by an experienced medical professional, you should contact your injector if you experience:

  • Significant eyelid drooping
  • Vision changes
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing (rare)
  • Severe swelling or signs of infection

If you ever have concerns after your treatment, our team is always happy to answer your questions

Beauty edit Tip

Planning Botox before a wedding, vacation, or special event?

Book your appointment at least two weeks in advance. This gives your Botox time to fully settle and allows enough time for any touch-ups if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sleep on my side after Botox?

Yes. There is no strong evidence that sleeping on your side later that night will affect your results. We simply recommend staying upright for the first four hours after treatment.

Can I wear makeup?

Yes. If possible, wait a few hours before applying makeup and avoid rubbing the treated areas while applying or removing it.

Can I drink coffee?

Yes. Coffee won’t affect your Botox results, although if you’re prone to bruising you may wish to avoid excessive caffeine immediately before your appointment.

Can I fly after Botox?

Yes. Flying does not affect Botox results. If you’re travelling for an important event, it’s still best to schedule your treatment at least two weeks beforehand.

Can I exercise tomorrow?

Yes. Most patients can return to their normal exercise routine the following day.
